"Alison Lapper Pregnant"

I relate to this critique by Richard Dorment (Telegraph 16-09-05) on the new statue to be on show for the next 18 months (luckily not for ever) in Trafalgar Square:

"...What you see at first sight is all there is to the work of art. It leaves no room for metaphor or allusion - nothing that the viewer can bring from his or her own experience that might enrich or change or deepen the meaning of the work...."

"...There is no possible response to this. It is not Miss Lapper whom Quinn has put on a pedestal in the heart of London, but political correctness. How smug and self-righteous he is. He knows full well that anyone who dares to criticise the statue will instantly be accused of prejudice against the disabled.

But to me it feels as though Quinn exploits people like Miss Lapper by focusing so entirely on her disability. In recent weeks she has been writing movingly about her life in various newspapers. Surely she would rather be known for her work as an artist and a writer than for Quinn's banal sculpture of her body.

Quinn isn't, as the politically correct expression has it, "celebrating difference" - he's advancing his own shoddy career."
